Arc Fault Detection Devices UKSpencer Yates
One of the hot topics within the electrical industry right now is the requirement to install Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs) and Proteus Switchgear were extremely proud to launch our single module AFDD combined with RCBO protection earlier this year – offering the customer complete circuit protection.
As a business, we strive to be always at the forefront of the changes in regulations within the electrical industry – ensuring we have a compliant and quality product offering for our customers.
Our customer base was eager to learn more about Arc Fault Detection and where it would be required within their installations. At the time of publishing Arc Fault protection is still a recommendation in the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations BS 7671:2018. However, the regulation states that ‘premises with sleeping accommodation’ should be fitted with AFDDs and due to this, one customer wanted to futureproof their contract.
Proteus Switchgear Arc Fault Detection Device’s are single module and fit any of our consumer units manufactured within the last 30 years. This is due to the busbar fixing arrangement remaining constant during this time frame. They are readily available from stock throughout the UK from 6 A – 40 A and in B or C Curve options. The AFDD is switched on both live and neutral.
As part of a redevelopment, our customer was involved building a 144-bedroom student accommodation complex. We were able to offer 4 different types of 100A DP isolator-controlled metal clad consumer units. These units were to be ‘fully-loaded’ with a range of 10 – 32 A single pole Arc Fault Detection Devices. In addition to this, alongside pre-populating the units with AFDD, we also fitted one of our direct connect MID-approved Modbus meters for energy consumption monitoring.
The pre-populated consumer units were built and despatched direct-to-site – saving our customer a huge amount of time and expenditure on labour by utilising our Midlands-based manufacturing operation facilities. 41 pre-populated consumer units were ordered, and our team produced and despatched them all within a three-week time frame. This included laser-etching our customers’ logo on the front cover of the consumer unit.
Finally, to ensure complete satisfaction on this order – as well as offering comprehensive protection through our consumer units, we also specified and supplied the main MCCB 400A 4P incoming panel board from our Telford-based factory Proteus Industrial.
Bespoke special build consumer units are available in a wide variety of configurations dependent on customer requirement.
